CPAC will pay tribute to Ed Sullivan

By Christine G. Adamo

An encore for The Doors may have been too much for Ed Sullivan to bear in the mid-1960s. These days, even “Pulp Fiction” has a shot at getting in on the action in “A Really Big Shew: A Tribute to the Ed Sullivan.”

Ed SullivanThe variety show, which stars celebrity impersonator Jerry Hoban, comes to the Carpenter Performing Arts Center at Cal State Long Beach Sunday. In it, Hoban expands the character he played in the “Jack Rabbit Slim” sequence of Quentin Tarantino’s hit film from 1994.

The event is poised as a nostalgic look back at American television culture, replete with clips of commercials that aired during Sullivan’s run on CBS from 1948 to 1971.

“There’s no other way to describe it than as a hoot of fun,” said Michele Roberge, general manager of the Carpenter Performing Arts Center.

“That’s exactly what this show is supposed to be,” she added, “a wonderful reminder of the early ’60s when everything was fresh — even TV.”

Hoban, as Sullivan, will recreate firsts from the original show with the help of other impersonators depicting the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and Liza Minelli. Comedy, magic and juggling are also on the line-up.

The Long Beach Community Concert Association, the nonprofit organization that planned the event, is sure “A Really Big Shew” will take us all back to a time when grandparents, parents and their children drew in close to their new-fangled television sets to watch a program that offered something virtually every family member could enjoy.

“A Really Big Shew: A Tribute to Ed Sullivan” begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center box office, located at 6200 Atherton St. A $60 series ticket provides admission to this and three other LBCCA- sponsored shows: “The Kinda Dixie Jazz Band” on Nov. 24, “Forever Plaid” on March 16, and “The Masters of Harmony” on May 18.

Individual ticket prices are $23 per adult, $20 per senior or $20 per student with a current CSULB identification card, and $10 for children under 16 years of age. Parking will be available in front of the Carpenter Performing Arts Center without an on-campus parking permit for $3.
