A Wok to Remember

By Gina Ponce

On-line Forty-Niner

As a friend and I walked into The Peking Wok Mandarin Cuisine for dinner there was an immediate sense of quietness and relaxation. The atmosphere was promoted by dim lighting and soft voices and provided a calm end to an otherwise chaotic day.

We were seated in the middle of a spacious room, which I usually find to be uncomfortable, but the tables were surprisingly far enough apart to still have privacy.    My first impression was that this is a place where I would like to be taken on a date.  It was definitely better than Pick Up Stix or Panda Express.

The menu was recognizable as far as Chinese food goes and the prices were cheap.  A dinner with soup, an appetizer and your choice of entrée(s) ranged from $9.55 a person to $14.55 a person.  Lunch specials are also available weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Portions were made to serve at least two people, with each entrée served separately for customers to serve themselves.

Our meal consisted of orange peel chicken, beef and broccoli, vegetable soup and chicken chow mein.  Being that I am a very picky eater I was delighted that I enjoyed every part of my meal.  Thick sauces, pleasant aromas and fast service only added to the experience.

Carla Valdez, a patron at the restaurant, said, “I enjoy coming here because when I’m really hungry I know I can get a fast quality meal without having to go to any fast food restaurant.”

Also available is a 50-person banquet room and delivery services.  The location at 6252 East Pacific Coast Highway is conveniently located about three miles from Cal State Long Beach.  The hours of operation are Monday through Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The Peking Wok has only been open for a few months and the business already seems to have gained in popularity.  I would grade this restaurant as a B+.
