Summer On-line Forty-Niner
Wondering how some
of the Long Beach State athletes and coaches are spending
this summer? Here are a few examples.
The USA Women's
National A2 Volleyball Team, with Long Beach State women's
volleyball players Brittany Hochevar, Tayyiba Haneef and Elisha
Thomas in the starting lineup, began a tour of the Dominican
Republic with a four-set victory.
The U.S. A2 team
beat the Dominican A2 team, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 25-13. The
tour continues this week.
David McKienzie,
Jim Polster and Matt Prosser, members of the LBSU men's volleyball
team, played for the USA Men's A2 team earlier this summer.
Dirtbag baseball
player Jeremy Reed is also making noise this summer, hitting
.349 batting leadoff with two homers and 17 runs scored for
Team USA, which has won 11 games in a row and sports a 17-5-1
record. Reed's average and run total lead the team.
"Playing for
this team has been unbelievable," Reed said from New
Jersey. "To say you've played for the USA is awesome."
The team will conclude
play Friday in Trenton, N.J. with a doubleheader against Taiwan.
LBSU men's water
polo player Chris Segesman is competing for Team USA at the
World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. Rick Azevedo, head
coach of the 49ers, is an assistant coach for Team USA.
The U.S. team lost
to Spain, 10-4, Tuesday, and dropped out of medal contention
with a 1-3 record in Group C, but came back to beat Australia,
6-5, on Wednesday. The team must beat Croatia today to qualify
for the World Cup next year in Perth, Australia.
