Construction brings
road closure
By Melissa Anderson

Amongst the clouds
of dust and the roaring truck engines lies another twist to
the construction of the new science building. East Campus
Drive, just north of the Microbiology Building, will be closed
until August 15.
The closure is
necessary to accommodate the relocation of a storm water drain,
which will be moved to the center of the drive.
"All of the
water from the new building will run down to that drain,"
said Mike Kumler, superintendent for Skidmore Contracting.
The construction,
expected to last 22 months, started last January. Although
the new science building will be beneficial to both students
and professors, the construction is creating frustration.
"Nothing but
dust and noise goes on all day," said Zahur Anwar, professor
of physics. "Closing the windows doesn't even help. I
don't know when it is going to end... seems like it should
be over already," Anwar said.
The new building
will also get an improved fire safety system. The new fire
system and the new drainage system will be both helpful and
necessary, Melissa Garcia, a senior biology major said.
"Some of the
older buildings don't have drainage systems in the rooms,"
Garcia said. "If we pulled the shower now there is no
place for the water to go and the room would get flooded.
The new building will have a new system so we won't have to
worry about that."
