Origami experts
and enthusiasts from local and national origami clubs will
be demonstrating and teaching the art form when the Earl Burns
Miller Japanese Garden hosts its annual Origami Festival July
15 at noon.
These experts will
be demonstrating how to create games as well as geometric,
animal, flower, and decorative folds from a single piece of
paper, according to Alison Redfoot, educational coordinator
of the garden.
The garden will
have several tables throughout with an expert seated at each,
according to Redfoot. Each expert will be teaching how to
do a different type of fold at their table and guests may
participate or simply observe. When the folding session
is through, the guests may move on to a new table to learn
another fold.
The hands-on event
will provide paper for guest participation. There will be
origami displays and information about the art of origami.
"There is
a huge interest in origami," Redfoot said. "It has
a real appeal and is growing in popularity."
A very mathematical
activity, origami is an excellent method of thinking spatially,
and has been used to fortify against memory loss, Redfoot
said.
The origami festival
has been a successful event that attracted 600 people last
year. Open to all ages, the garden is anticipating a similar
turnout this year.
The festival is
partially supported by the Public Corporation for the Arts
in Long Beach, which provided the garden a grant for the event,
Redfoot said.
There will be refreshments
for sale and free parking for those who attend.
"It's an excellent
activity for people who have extra time on their hands,"
Redfoot said. "It is so simple, yet poetic."
