Construction continues despite bumps in road

By Danielle Grossman

Construction of the Fine Arts Buildings at Cal State Long Beach is continuing as planned despite some problems with the contractor.

Construction began in February 2000 for phase one of a project that includes the major renovation of FA1, FA2, the art gallery, the art store, and surrounding areas. The construction will modify the buildings to bring them up to code to meet the needs of the art department.

Students and faculty in the College of the Arts are finding ways to work around the renovations. Since the college is borrowing space from other departments such as health services and engineering, those departments are also being affected.

"As with any renovations, there's sacrifices to be made," said Colleen Ryan, facilities coordinator for the College of the Arts. "This is going to be for the ultimate betterment for the entire art department."

Construction was halted February 14, 2001 when CSULB officials thought the contractor, Dennis J. Amoroso, violated the contract said Scott Charmack, associate vice president for physical planning and facilities management. Allegations against the contractor included not protecting the building from rain.

Charmack said the two parties eventually decided to work out another agreement together rathar than wasting money in courts that could be spent on the construction. It took 10 weeks to amend the original contract.

"We think that we've structured this agreement so that it's fair to all parties," Charmack said.

Construction began again on June 25. The contractor has six weeks from the start date to complete construction and 150 days after that to complete the final construction.

"It's been very challenging, but we remain hopeful," Ryan said.
Renovations, however, may not be moving as fast as Charmack and others would like.

"We're concerned they're not processing the work as fast as they could and should," Charmack said.
