Cal State Long
Beach President Robert Maxson received an award for leadership
in San Francisco on Saturday for the creation of the most
successful privately funded scholarship program in the CSU
system.
The Council for
Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) honored Maxson
with the Chief Executive Leadership Award, which is given
out annually for outstanding efforts promoting education.
Although Maxson
was unable to attend the ceremony, Sue Lauer, Director of
Development at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center accepted
the award on his behalf. Lauer was unavailable for comment
on the event.
"This award
goes to the men and women who work at Long Beach State, and
go to school here." Maxson said. "I was very excited
when I was notified I had it."
CSULB has attracted
over 350 California valedictorians and National Merit Scholars.
"We recruit
California high school valedictorians," Maxon said.
Maxson's other
efforts include the "seamless education" program,
a partnership between CSULB and Long Beach City College, to
ease the transition between schools.
CASE is the largest
nonprofit education association, with offices in Washington,
DC and London.
It has memberships
in over 3,000 colleges, universities, independent and secondary
schools in over 45 countries. It acts to further and
support education worldwide.
Successful fundraising
is another area to which Maxson attributes his receiving the
award.
"We have raised
about 24 million dollars in private donations."
