Library to host Institute on Children's Literature

By Priscilla Gutierrez
Summer Forty-Niner

The Cal State Long Beach University Library will host the 3rd annual Summer Institute on Children's Literature on July 20 and 21.

The two-day event will feature award-winning authors, illustrators and educators, speaking about their books and how they envision the books to be used in the classroom, according to Sylvia Maxson, associate professor in the college of education, and the coordinator of the institute.

Those scheduled to speak are Fred Bortz, also known as "Dr. Fred;" Pam Munoz Ryan; Maryann Weidt; Carl Otis Hurst; Ben Mikaelsen; Joe Cepeda and Paul Boyd-Batstone.

This year's theme will focus on integrating children's literature into the classroom, according to the institute's Web site. The authors and illustrators will be discussing how to enhance the curriculum in different areas of study such as math, science, social studies, art, music and language arts by using children's literature.

"There is no where else in our general area that a teacher can go and have this type of collection of authors and illustrators together," Maxson said.

Participants in the event are usually elementary school teachers and students interested in teaching children's literature, according to Maxson.

Participants will be able to sit down and talk with the authors and illustrators at lunch and throughout the day, and will be able to purchase books and have them signed.

"Teachers really enjoy getting to know the authors and the illustrators up close and personal so they can share that kind of information with their students," Maxson said.

Participation in the institute will be limited to 75 people, and lunch will be provided both days. Students have an opportunity to receive a one-unit extension credit for attending.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for teachers in Long Beach Unified and surrounding school districts," Maxson said. "It's becoming something that's very well-known in the area and people just really enjoy it."

One can check csulb.edu/library for more information and attendance fees.
