Academic Advising
allows walk-in students
By Tina Dhamija

A new walk-in service
is available at the Academic Advising Center for students
with emergency advisement needs or those who wish to bypass
the appointment process.
The new once-a-week-
service, "Walk-in Wednesdays," is open to all current
or entering Cal State Long Beach students, regardless of class
year or registration status.
"This program
is a pilot for the summer," said Marilee Samuelson, director
of the Academic Advising Center. "We are never able to
accommodate everybody with appointments and so far it's been
great."
Already three weeks
into the summer session, "Walk-in Wednesdays" works
on a first-come, first-serve basis. The hours are 9 a.m. to
4:15 p.m., with a break in service from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The maximum amount of time per student is 30 minutes.
"Our appointment
system is only able to let us book ahead for 10 days,"
Samuelson said. "Sometimes we're so short-staffed that
students have to wait two weeks for an appointment, which
makes us feel really bad."
Even freshmen who
have not attended the campus orientation service SOAR are
eligible to walk in, Samuelson said.
"Normally
our appointments are not open to freshman unless they've been
[to SOAR], but we are not putting any restrictions on anybody,
although we urge freshmen to still go through SOAR first."
Since "Walk-in
Wednesdays" is a trial program, its success this summer
will determine whether it will be available to CSULB students
during future semesters. To attend, advising is available
every Wednesday this summer in Library East-- 125.
