Center open during
summer

The Student Health
Center will be offering services for Cal State Long Beach
students throughout the summer despite its unknown presence
on campus.
"Whenever
I talk about the Health Center to students in my classes,
some people don't even know it exists," said Roger Munoz,
a student assistant at the Health Center.
Students enrolled
in the current semester, fall 2001 semester and spring 2001
semester may take advantage of the services that the Health
Center provides.
"Come to the
Health Center," said Lawrence Harvey, a registered nurse
at the Health Center. "We're willing to show it to anybody
at anytime and give them a tour."
Operating hours
are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Wednesday,
9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Friday, 8 a.m. to noon. Students can
make an appointment or walk in.
"Our busiest
hours are in the afternoon from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.," Donna
Rhinehart, a medical laboratory technologist, said.
Rhinehart said
that the most important thing to remember is that services
are free to students during the regular semester because students
pay a $35 fee included in university registration fees. According
to Harvey, CSULB has the second lowest fee of all other California
State University campuses.
However, because
there are no fees paid during the summer, a $4 charge can
be paid by students at the time of service. A charge may also
be applied for lab tests that must be sent out of the Health
Center. For instance, a Pap smear costs $9 because it must
be sent out.
To register for
classes, the university requires that students provide proof
of immunizations for measles and rubella. Also, if a student
is 18 or under on the first day of the student's first enrolled
semester, he or she must also show proof of having an immunization
for hepatitis B.
The Health Center's
laboratory technicians are only equipped to perform basic
analyses such as vaginal wet mouth, gonorrhea, urinalysis,
pregnancy, mono, and blood count tests.
The Health Center
has four full-time physicians, one full-time nurse practitioner,
and six full-time nurses on staff. There is also a pharmacist,
an x-ray technologist, a radiologist, and three laboratory
technicians on staff. In addition, a gynecology specialist
comes in once a month to follow up on abnormal pap smears.
Currently the Health Center is also looking to add a dermatologist
and an orthopedist to the staff.
In addition to
routine medical services provided, a psychiatrist is available
at the Health Center part-time.
Over-the-counter
drugs are available to students through the pharmacy at low
costs: Benadryl, $1.50 (24 count); Calamine lotion, $1.25
(4 oz.); Durex condoms, $2 (12 count); Ibuprofen, $2 (50 count).
A complete list is available at the pharmacy.
The Health Resource
Center, a part of the Student Health Center, is also available
to students during the year, though the only service available
during the summer is the free HIV testing and counseling.
Other services offered during the spring and fall semesters
include the sexual health awareness workshop; nutrition counseling;
and the alcohol, tobacco and other drug use prevention workshop.
