Former U.S. Secretary
of the Army and former California Assembly Member Louis Caldera
was named California State University Vice Chancellor Monday.
As CSU Vice Chancellor
for University Advancement, Caldera will be in charge of fund
raising, alumni and public affairs and publications,"
said Ken Swisher, spokesperson for the CSU Chancellor's Office.
"He's a very
impressive person," Swisher said.
Caldera was born
in El Paso, Texas, and raised in Los Angeles. He graduated
from West Point. He received a law degree and an MBA from
Harvard University in 1987.
During his term
as Army Secretary, the 45-year-old created the Army University
Access Online distance education program, which helps soldiers
earn degrees while serving, Swisher said.
Caldera also expanded
the junior ROTC program and created a plan which helped recruitment
efforts, Swisher said. He also improved opportunities for
non-high school graduates to join the Army.
As a California
State Assemblyman for five years, Caldera represented the
46th District, centered in downtown Los Angeles. He was a
member of the Higher Education Committee and chaired various
committees. He left the Assembly in 1997.
Caldera was also
Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Corporation
for National and Community Service.
"This is a
position that's been open for about six months," Swisher
said. "It was a national search, and the chancellor recommended
[Caldera] to the position, and the [CSU] Board of Trustees
approved it."
Caldera is married
and has three daughters.
He begins his duties
at the CSU June 20.
