Graduates honored during Commencement

By Larry W. Brunson
Summer Online Forty-Niner

Nine outstanding graduates were able to sit and share their accomplishments on a platform with Cal State Long Beach President Robert Maxson and other distinguished faculty during last week’s 2001 Commencement ceremonies.

"The reason that we select an outstanding graduate is to symbolically recognize the contributions of the faculty to that success," said Armando Contreras, executive assistant to Maxson.

Every year at Commencement, Contreras said, members in each of the nine colleges select an outstanding graduate to be honored at each of the ceremonies. In turn, each graduate selects a professor they believe was the most influential in their college career – often referred to as a student’s MVP, or most valuable player.

Not only were the students honored at the Commencement ceremonies, but also by the Alumni Association at a banquet dinner at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Long Beach. Each student was able to invite their parents and their MVP.

Contreras believes it is important to give recognition to graduates with outstanding academic achievements to the university, as well as CSULB faculty.

During the Commencement ceremonies, the outstanding students sat with their MVP, Maxson, Associated Students Inc. President Robert Garcia, as well as prominent faculty and staff. Besides receiving an award, the students gave a brief speech and presented their MVP an award.

The outstanding graduates were:

  • Sandra Basabe, College of Liberal Arts, Romance, German, and Russian Languages and Literatures
  • Lorena A. Izarraraz, College of Liberal Arts, Psychology
  • Danielle Mitchell, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Marine Biology and Zoology
  • Samantha M. Ko, College of Health and Human Services, Nursing
  • Elizabeth M. McGuire, College of Health and Human Services, Communicative Disorders
  • James Kirk Hodge, Jr., College of Engineering, Civil Engineering
  • Viseth Vann, College of Education, Liberal Studies
  • Kimberly Ladd, College of Business Administration, Accountancy
  • Tabatha Easley, College of the Arts, Music
