Cal State Long
Beach has proudly been named in the Hispanic
Outlook in Higher Education's Top 100 list of four-year
U.S. colleges and universities that conferred the most academic
degrees of Latino students.
The national campus
journal Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education ranked Cal State
Long Beach 13th in their "Top 100" list of four-year
institutions that had high numbers of Latino graduates.
The National Center
for Education Statistics named Cal State Long Beach 34th in
awarding master's degrees.
"The high
ranking reflects our diverse campus and the larger number
of Latino students enrolled," said Armando Contreras,
executive assistant to President Robert Maxson.
As the Latino population
grows throughout the country, so is the number of students
enrolling in four-year colleges and universities. The CSULB
population grows gradually each academic year, according to
the CSULB Institutional Research Web site.
Along with population
growth, greater numbers are graduating from high school. So
more are eligible to attend colleges and universities."
In the 1999-2000
academic year, nearly 25% of the 25,153 Cal State Long Beach
undergraduates was defined as Mexican-American, Chicano or
Latino. Of the 4,158 graduates that year, 822, or 19.8
percent were Latino.
Hispanic Outlook
notes that the number of bachelor's degrees to Latinos increased
by 2,600 to 41,000, and the number of master's degrees rose
to 10,262.
CSULB and the CSU
system as a whole have a minority enrollment of more than
50 percent, according to the CSU Web site. In the 2000 CSU
graduating class, 10,168 Latino students graduated among 23,268
minority students receiving their bachelor's degrees.
"I'm pleased
that so many Chicanos and Latinos have graduated from Cal
State University Long Beach," Arroyo said. "I believe
that their graduation rate is testament to the determination
of the university to provide an education to people of all
backgrounds."
Other CSU campuses
made the "Top 100" list awarding Bachelors degrees
to Latinos.
- CSU San Diego
State (5th).
- CSU Los Angeles
(8th),
- CSU Fullerton
(9th),
- CSU Fresno
(17th),
- Cal Poly Pomona
(29th)
"We are very
proud," said Assistant Contreras.
"But we recognize
there is still a lot of things that can be done to help more
students graduate."
