Bush opts not
to recognize Gay Pride Month

Groups on and off
campus that support diversity, like the Women's Resource Center
and the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Greater Long Beach,
are finding little surprise in President George W. Bush's
announcement last week that he was opting out of Gay Pride
Month.
Unlike Clinton
before him, Bush said he will not issue a proclamation with
a designation for the celebration of Gay Pride Month, a nationwide
celebration throughout the month of June.
"I think it
shows a certain position to stop and say we're not going to
observe this," said Stephanie Farrington-Dominque, executive
director of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Greater
Long Beach. "I don't feel we'll get much support from
the current administration."
The City of Long
Beach, as well as California State University, Long Beach,
officially celebrates gay pride in the month of May.
Throughout the
month the CSULB Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource
Center hosts events on campus, as well as participating in
the gay pride parade.
While the Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center on campus was not
available for comment on the issue, Lynne Coenen, assistant
director of the Women's Resource Center, believes the issue
needs to be examined.
"It's unfortunate
that the president doesn't observe what the public wants,"
Coenen said.
