The University
Art Museum will reopen its doors after weeklong renovations,
featuring two new exhibits that will run July 10 to July 29.
"The museum
was closed last week for minor improvements to the space.
We had some painting to do, and we're upgrading our lighting
system, nothing special," said Mary-Kay Lombino, the
curator of exhibitions.
The first exhibit,
"Worth a Thousand Words: The Narrative Impulse,"
features work curated by the museum associate director, Ilee
Kaplan. The selected images were intentionally chosen to create
a tension, so visitors will be able to interact with the exhibit.
Featured artists
for the exhibit include Jonathan Borofsky, Richard Bosman,
Eric Fischl, Maria Gomez, Graciela Iturbide, David Leventhal,
Howard Schatz, and Lorna Simpson.
The second exhibit
to open in July is "Sounding Off: A Series of Audio Installations."
The audio exhibit will run in three separate programs that
start with "Anne Bray: Ashes, Ashes," a narrative
that brings together fragments and objects. The presentation
will describe the actions of multiple characters with the
narrator's voice emitting from an institutional speaker set
into a suitcase.
The overall exhibit
tells the story of ordinary people dealing with catastrophe.
The featured artist, Bray, teaches public art at the University
of Southern California, and new genres at Claremont Graduate
University. She displays art at gas stations, malls
and movie theaters. Her work has been shown on television
and in department stores.
Bray also directs
"L.A. Freewaves," a group of arts organizations,
cable stations, libraries and schools presenting a new media
festival every two years throughout Los Angeles.
Students can visit
the University Art Museum for free.
