Firework shows to be held on Catalina and Queen Mary

By Priscilla Gutierrez
Summer Forty-Niner

Looking for a fireworks show on the Fourth of July? Two sites will offer such shows, and one will quench your fireworks desire if you can't wait for the holiday.

The annual Queen Mary July 4 Extravaganza will begin on Saturday, June 30 and continue on July 1, 3 and 4.

The fireworks shows will take place on June 30, July 1 and 4 beginning at 9 p.m. The 20-minute fireworks spectacular on July 4 is co-sponsored each year by the City of Long Beach.

The fireworks will be visible across the harbor to the numerous spectators watching from boats or who picnic and barbecue on the beach, and will also be seen by people celebrating in the downtown area, according to John Adamson, director of special events for the Queen Mary.

The fireworks will be choreographed to music, but only those aboard the ship will be able to hear it.

A carnival will be held adjacent to the ship in the Queen Mary Events Park on all four dates.

Visitors are allowed to enter the carnival at no charge, but the games and rides at the carnival require tickets that can be purchased once inside.

"It's a great celebration and probably the largest fireworks display in Southern California," Adamson said.

For more information regarding the July 4 celebration at the Queen Mary, one may call (562) 435-3511.

The annual 4th of July celebration at Avalon Bay on Catalina Island will kick off on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with a golf cart parade that will feature the University of Southern California marching band.

It is a successful event that draws numerous people each year, according to Wayne Griffin, president and CEO of the Catalina Island visitor's bureau. It includes a barbecue buffet dinner and a fireworks show starting at 9 p.m.

"It is one of our busiest days of the year," Griffin said. "It's a nice, old-fashioned Fourth of July."
