The Long Beach State 49ers battled through some difficult games this weekend during the National Invitational Softball Tournament in San Jose going 1-4.

The 49ers lost to Virginia Tech, Oregon, California and Purdue while defeating Miami, Ohio University.

"We had some tough games," Head Coach Pete Manarino said. "But we are definitely hitting the ball harder and we have played some good defense."

The first game ended in a 2-1 loss to Virginia Tech. Early on the 49ers (9-18) were looking strong with two hits each by Nicole Spencer and Arleight Thorp. However Virginia bounced back in the sixth though, scoring two runs for the win.

Later that day, LBSU made a strong showing against Miami, defeating them 3-0. Senior Kelly Nasrawi struck out four batters and allowed only three hits.

In the night cap of a tripleheader, the 49ers lost its momentum when they fell 7-2 to Oregon. Jessica Smith and Natalie Walker scored two hits for the team, but Oregon took them out in the top of the seventh with five runs.

The next day LBSU faced Cal in a tough game that ended 1-0 in favor of the Golden Bears. The teams scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Cal scored the only run of the game.

LBSU then fell to Purdue 2-1 after the Boilermaker scored both runs in the first inning.
"We've just hit a little hard luck," Manarino said after the tournament. "But I liked the progress I saw."

The 49ers will play Notre Dame tonight at 7:00 at Mayfield Park in Lakewood.
