49ers set for Big West Tournament

Long Beach State women's basketball faces the University of Idaho Wednesday afternoon as the No. 2 seed in the Big West Tournament at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The 49ers, (15-12 overall, 10-4 Big West Conference), will attempt to defeat Idaho, (7-20, 4-10), for the third time this season.

"Idaho has some outside threats on their team," Head Coach Dallas Boychuk-Bolla  said. "You go from one game in Santa Barbara that's trying to pound on the inside and then you go to the other end with Idaho where they're a good three-pointer team. That's kind of a scary thing because no matter how far you get ahead sometimes they can get back quick."

The Beach defeated the Vandals in January with a 75-69 win and won again by 22 points with a final score of 92-70 in February.

"Anybody can beat anybody in this tournament," Boychuck- Bolla said. "You've just got to be ready for every game."

The game tentatively starts at 2:30 p.m., following the Cal Poly-Pacific game. The 49ers enter the game after losing their last game to No. 1 seed, UC Santa Barbara, Saturday.

"With two minutes to go, the score was 80-78,"  Boychuck-Bolla said. "They got up on us as much as 15, and we made a good run in the end. Unfortunately, we didn't pull it through the last couple of minutes. We're good, and we're ready to go."

LBSU is entering the conference with a few strong weapons, including Big West Conference Player of the Year Jackie Moore.

"This was her year," Boychuck-Bolla said. "She is playing really well, and she's a tough person to stop."

Idaho also needs to worry about first-team all-Big West selection Reta Sula, who is infamous for her strong defense and three-point shooting.

If The Beach wins its first game, it will be facing the winner of the Cal Poly-University of Pacific game Friday at noon.

No. 3 seed, Pacific (17-10, 10-4) was defeated by LBSU in both conference games with losses of 88-69 and 91-77.

However, the 49ers may have to face Cal Poly, (11-16, 5-9). The Mustangs beat the 49ers in their first conference game against each other with a victory of 76-62. LBSU got its payback with an 80-70 win over Cal Poly in the second match.
