The Long Beach State softball team is an overall 8-13 after competing in the Worth Invitational Tournament this weekend in Fullerton.

The team was matched against Oregon and Berkley on Day 1, Portland State and Minnesota on Day 2 and San Jose State and Colorado State on Day 3. The tournament ended in a 3-3 split for the 49ers.

The first day was tough for LBSU, ending in two losses. Oregon took the first game in eight innings, scoring a total of 10 runs in the final two innings. The 49ers looked strong through the sixth, with Kelly Nasarawi allowing only seven hits and one run. In the seventh, she allowed three runs which tied up the score. Traci Hensel stepped in for the overtime inning and allowed seven runs, although only one was earned due to two 49er errors. The Beach tried to battle back in the eight. Jessica Smith hit a two-run homer and Patricia Espinosa doubled to bring Jaclyn Fredrickson in for a run, but was unable to take the lead. The game ended in an 11-7 loss.

The Beach faced No. 4 ranked Cal later that evening who held them in a 3-0 shut out. Pitcher Jocelyn Forest allowed only two hits and struck out 16 players.

The 49ers came back strong on Day 2, defeating Portland State 2-1 in the morning and Minnesota 3-1 that night. Nasrawi struck out three batters and allowed only five hits in the morning game against Portland.

Game 2 against Minnesota opened with the 49ers scoring two runs in the first inning. One was off Jamie Farnworth's RBI and the other off a fielder's choice by Smith. Lindsey Knoff pitched a complete game and allowed only four hits and one run.

The final day of the tournament ended in a split for LBSU, with a win over New Mexico and a loss to San Jose State. Erin Tucker earned a RBI in the fifth inning against New Mexico for the 1-0 win in the afternoon. Immediately following, the 49ers fell to San Jose State in a 1-0 shut out.

The women will be playing Colorado State today in Fullerton and take part in the National Invitational Softball Tournament hosted by San Jose State this weekend.
