Men's basketball
Junior UCLA transfer
Travis Reed scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the
49ers' 71-56 home victory over Utah State University on Feb.
17. Utah State went on to become the Big West Conference Champions
and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
In Long Beach State's
first round 95-70 loss to Boise State University in the Big
West tournament on March 8, senior guard Ramel "Rock"
Lloyd had a hand in over half of the 49ers' offensive output.
He posted a season-high 34 points (two shy of tying the tournament
record), had four rebounds and three assists.
Women's basketball
Jackie Moore, senior
center, scored a career-high 35 points on 12-of-18 shooting
and gathered 14 rebounds (10 offensive) in The Beach's regular-season
finale loss (86-80) at UC Santa Barbara on March 4.
Moore, the Big
West Player of the Year, also signed a WNBA contract after
the conclusion of the 49ers' playoff run; She was drafted
by the Sacramento Monarchs in the second round as the 30th
pick overall.
Baseball
Senior outfielder
Jeff Jones put together a 20-game hit streak during the regular
season, which is the third longest in LBSU's history. He also
went 4-for-5, hit two homeruns, had five runs scored (ties
school record) and three RBIs in the Dirtbags' 18-11 victory
at Arizona University on Feb. 4.
Kaulana Kuhaulua,
junior infielder, hit 5-for-7, scored five runs (ties school
record) and recorded three RBI's in LBSU's 21-9 win at Arizona
on Feb. 3.
Right-handed pitcher
Matt Paz, junior, pitched 7 shutout innings and struck out
four batters while only allowing one hit in the 49ers' 6-4
defeat of Arizona on Feb. 2.
Softball
In The Beach's
three-game series at Utah State (March 30-April 1), freshman
Darcey Brown hit 5-for-7, reached base safely in 9-of-11 plate
appearances, scored four runs and had four RBIs, including
two, two-run homeruns in Game 2.
Freshman Lindsey
Knoff, right-handed pitcher, threw a 17-inning 1-0 shutout
against Cal State Northridge on April 21. Knoff tallied eight
strikeouts for LBSU while only giving up eight hits in the
long outing.
Men's volleyball
All-American first
teamer Dave McKienzie, senior outside-hitter, smashed 40 kills
in the 49ers' five-game victory at UCLA on Jan. 26. The effort
earned McKienzie AVCA/Sports Import Player of the Week honors.
Senior outside
hitter Jim Polster, second team All-American, recorded 16
kills, eight blocks, five digs and hit .379 in The Beach's
four-game win over Stanford on March 29.
Women's tennis
No. 1 singles player
Anastasia Dvornikova, freshman Moscow native, defeated Boise
State's Reneta Stoop (ranked No. 72 by year's end) 6-4, 3-6,
7-6 (7-5) in LBSU's 7-0 home victory on March 26. Boise State
went on to win the Big West Championship against the 49ers,
4-3.
The No. 1 doubles
team of seniors Mandy Carvalho and Sophie Han, native of Pusan,
South Korea, beat Loyola Marymount's Andrea Lord and Angelica
Zdorovytsky (ranked No. 34 by year's end), 8-6, in The Beach's
5-2 road victory on March 21.
Women's water
polo
Utility/Driver
Angelica Garcia, freshman native of Catano, Puerto Rico, scored
eight goals in the 49ers' fifth-place finish at the UC Santa
Barbara Invitational (Feb. 24-25). Garcia led The Beach with
58 goals on the season, the fourth-best single season total
in school history.
Track and field
Freshman women's
pole-vaulter Connie Jerz jumped a career-best 13-1 1/2 at
the Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State University on
April 14. Jerz became the first LBSU woman to eclipse the
13-foot barrier.
Senior Kashus Perona
won the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 46.56 seconds
while taking second place in the 200-meter (21.48) and relays
at the California/Nevada Track and Field Championships held
at UC Irvine on April 29. His performance earned him the recognition
of being one of two Runners of the Year for the event.
Senior Tayyiba
Haneef won the women's high jump with a leap of 5-10 1/2,
the top Big West mark of the season, at the Trojan Invitational
at USC on Mar. 3
Golf
Senior John Mallinger,
a NCAA West Regional Championship qualifier and All-Conference
first teamer, had his best showing at the Pepperdine Spalding
Intercollegiate (Oct. 9-10, 2000) where he tied for second
place.
Marie Louise Juul,
an All-Conference first team selection, had her best showing
at the Lady Lumberjack Invitational (Sept. 25-26, 2000) where
she tied for fifth place.
