49ers end year on positive note

By Jamie Rogers
On-line Forty-Niner

The careers of junior Jaclyn Fredrickson, seniors Jennifer Spigner and Kelly Nasrawi ended on a positive note this weekend after a three-game sweep against Cal State Sacramento at the 49er Softball Complex.

"[The women] played well as a team," Head Coach Pete Manarino said. "They hit the ball well. It is nice to end the season on a positive note."

Game one ended 4-1 for The Beach Saturday after the 49ers scored three runs in the first inning. The bases were loaded when Christina Zepeda and Fredrickson scored off a wild throw home. Jamie Farnworth came up to bat next to earn a RBI.

The Hornets scored its only run in the fifth inning. By the sixth inning, Nasrawi started showing signs of fatigue and gave up six more hits. Knoff stepped in for the save, striking out the next thee batters.

The twilight game ended after only five innings when the 49ers enforced the eight-run rule. In the first inning, LBSU posted two runs in the first inning and seven in the second. In both the first and second innings, freshman Darcey Brown hit two-run doubles. In the second inning, sophomore Kristina McCarty produced a three-run double. CSU Sacramento earned its only run in the top of the second on a RBI by Amber Dragomir.

The 49ers came back late in the sixth inning Sunday when Farnworth hit a drive past Hornet pitcher Jillian Bivert and second baseman Lori Meixner, bringing Brown in from second base. Spigner then hit a single, bringing a runner in from third and tying the score at 2-2.

Cassie Preece later hit a line drive past relief pitcher Gina Steenburgen, bringing in Farnworth and Spigner. Knoff picked up another save after Nasrawi gave up only two runs, one in the third and one in the sixth.

This year, which The Beach finished 24-29 for the regular season and 12-9 in Big West Conference play, was Manarino's first losing season in the 18 years he has coached for the 49ers. On Sunday, he bid farewell to the players who will not return next year.

"We had senior day with a nice ceremony before the game. Everything was very positive," he said. "We have a good nucleus of players coming back from this season, good leaders. And we will be signing six freshmen in the fall. We are looking forward to next season."
