special
investigation: safety
How safe are we?
By John Caldwell
On-line Forty-Niner
Many people consider
their level of safety every day. Natural instincts can drive
a tenancy to evaluate every situation for its potential threat
of harm or death and give rise to the establishment of agencies
and service organizations that protect the public.
But when the threat
is insidious, an accurate evaluation of safety is difficult
to make. To overcome this, one must look at the facts.
Safety on college
campuses is often viewed as particularly important given some
heightened risk factors that come with a campus environment.
Large groups of people working and living in close quarters
can be more susceptible to harm from threats such as disease
or structural dilapidation. Increased pedestrian traffic and
diets of predominantly "fast food" prepared in questionably
clean environments pose additional and more obvious risks.
This special section
of the On-line Forty-Niner is an investigation into some of
the safety risks at Cal State Long Beach and similar college
campuses. Careful delineation of statistics and policies regarding
crime on campus, building safety, infectious diseases and
food preparation are complimented by a look at one of the
many pedestrian hazards students are facing at CSULB.
