Athletics and
arts in the spotlight
Last Monday, Jackie
Moore, a center on the Long Beach State women's basketball team,
was awarded Big West Conference Player of the Year. Moore has
made significant contributions to a great team this season.
Last Wednesday,
I had the opportunity to join a fantastic crowd of students
in the dedication of the new Beach Pride Center at the University
Student Union. My hat is off to the leadership of your student
government and the dozens of commissioners and students who
worked very hard this past year to make the Beach Patrol headquarters
a reality for all students to enjoy and obtain information
about university activities.
The Associated
Students Inc. commissioners were extremely pleased with the
amazing turnout of students at the campus event. I hope students
will take a few minutes to stop by the center to find out
how exciting collaborative projects are being developed and
how they can get involved.
CSULB student government
leaders are looking forward to receiving your valuable input.
Through big and small activity programs, A.S.I. wants to improve
the university experience for all current and future students.
On March 18, a
performance of "L'Histoire du Soldat" will be presented at
the Edison Theatre in downtown Long Beach. It is a poignant
morality tale with musical and visual twists. Based on a Russian
folk tale, the production is a wonderful blend of the arts.
Several students
from the dance, music and theatre arts departments will come
together to interpret the theatrical work written by the renowned
composer Igor Stravinsky.
Also not to be
missed is David Rabe's play, "Streamers" at the University
Players' Theater. This chilling Vietnam-era story about the
lives of four young men is receiving great reviews. This university
production ends on March 17.
Following "Streamers"
is another Vietnam-era production called "A Piece of My Heart,"
which tells the women's perspective on the war experience.
Students can see these plays at discount rates with their
student I.D
Congratulations
to Jenny Hilt, the 49ers women's tennis team coach, and the
exceptionally talented women of the team. Anastasia Dvornikova,
Alena Dvornikova, Mandy Carvalho, Sophie Han, Christina Son,
Cheryl Kindred and Kelly Chan soundly beat the nationally
ranked Yale team last week.
This is the first
time in recent years that a 49er tennis team has outplayed
a nationally ranked team during the regular season.
Go BEACH!
