A.S.I.: A $6 million
CSULB corporation
Many students are
not aware that Associated Students Inc. is not only a student
government, but also a non-profit corporation. The A.S.I. employs
45 full-time staff members, 180 students and has a budget of
more than $6 million.
About 30 percent
of that budget is generated through profits from our divisions,
which includes student government, the University Student
Union, the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center, administrative
services, and the Union newspaper. As an auxiliary of the
university, A.S.I. operates independently of the state budget.
As leaders of a
multimillion-dollar corporation, it is our responsibility
to ensure that we provide the best services possible to our
students. It is also within our responsibility to oversee
major personnel decisions.
This year, we hired
four new full-time staff members. What makes these individuals
unique is that they are the first to hold their respective
positions. Their jobs, created this year, will address the
needs in their respective departments.
Realizing the importance
of fundraising and development, A.S.I. has created a new development
associate. Bridgette Wong, a Cal State Long Beach alumna,
has been selected to fill that position. As a development
associate, Wong will be responsible for fundraising for the
corporation on behalf of students. Wong will also oversee
a major student scholarship initiative that will launch in
April.
Our new activities
coordinator, Raul Alcala, will oversee the new Beach Pride
Center and all major A.S.I. programs. Alcala will also serve
as our liaison to the athletic department and work closely
with our cheer squad, pep band and dance team.
Our new student
media advisor, John Trapper, will oversee the Union newspaper,
KBEACH radio and the upcoming Goldmine yearbook.
We have also hired
a new full-time receptionist for the A.S.I. government offices.
Marion Bankston started last week and will serve as a resource
for students who have questions about grant application, student
travel or other services.
Robert Garcia
is a communication studies major at Cal State Long Beach.
