A closer look
at Beach Pride
I am sure that by
now many of you have heard the phrase "Beach Pride"
somewhere around campus. Many have questioned what the phrase
means or stands for. I believe Beach Pride is being proud that
one attends Cal State Long Beach.
Students can be
proud of their school's student services programs. The Associated
Students Inc. is committed to addressing the issue of retention
on campus by holding a town hall meeting every Wednesday.
We have also set aside space for a retention center at the
University Student Union, and have proposed a $30,000 retention
fund in this year's A.S.I. budget. We will also
be launching a student scholarship program this semester with
both tuition and book scholarships.
Students can be
proud of their school's athletic program. Through the passing
of the Beach Pride Referendum, we have ensured more money
for our sports programs and athletic scholarships. In order
to increase attendance at sporting events we have initiated
the Beach Patrol, which gives incentives for students to attend
games. The kickoff for Beach Patrol was at this year's Homecoming
game, and it resulted in the highest student turnout ever
at a basketball game at The Pyramid.
Students can be
proud of their school's activity programs. Through events
such as the Save Ferris concert, the Week of Welcome and the
upcoming concert at The Pyramid, A.S.I. is always looking
for ways to ensure that students have a good experience outside
of the classroom.
Students can be
proud of their school's campus facilities. By making the campus
look more unified, a stronger sense of tradition is established.
We have taken many steps in this area by remodeling the student
union and refurbishing the pool. We will continue to make
this campus a better place by redesigning the speaker's platform
and painting the campus kiosks black and gold.
Finally, students
can be proud of their school's beliefs. CSULB is proud to
head up "Cal State Cares," a statewide day of community
service on March 30 in observance of Caesar Chavez Day. In
addition, A.S.I. does numerous amounts of charity work in
the community.
With this in mind,
I am proud to announce that the Beach Pride Center will have
its grand opening on March 7 in the University Student Union.
The center's mission will be to promote continuous improvement
in academics, athletics and activities.
