opinion: letters

McVeigh reaction

This letter is a response to the "Don't let McVeigh become a martyr" article in the May 9 issue of the Online Forty-Niner.

I was shocked when I read Mr. Ledermuller's opinion column on Timothy McVeigh.   Although I agree he should not become a martyr for the citizens of this great country, I was stunned to find a very poorly researched article.

I realize this is an opinion column, but as a teacher would say, "Your opinion is only as good as the facts you have to back them up."

"Why did McVeigh choose the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City?"

McVeigh picked that particular building because of the specific offices it had in it--FBI, IRS, etc. Also, unlike the article suggests, he did not avoid larger cities because of the security measures.

He picked the Murrah Federal Building because he wanted to hurt only the federal government. If he had attacked a federal building in a larger city with non-federal workers, his plan would not have worked. This counters the suggestion made by Mr. Ledermuller that McVeigh could have hit a school.

I don't disagree that McVeigh should not be considered a martyr, but please check the facts before you print your opinion.
