Beach Pride Center  to open tomorrow

By Brooke L. Nichols
Special to the On-line Forty-Niner

Free food, live music and plenty of Beach Pride will be at the University Student Union pool Wednesday from noon to 5 p.m.

To kick off the festivities, Cal State Long Beach President Robert Maxson and Robert Garcia, president of the Associated Students Inc. will cut the red ribbon to open the Beach Pride Center.

The Beach Pride Center is "a great student activity center for students that promotes all student events, athletes, and up-coming events on campus," Garcia said.

Free hamburgers, chips and soda will be served at the pool. Five local bands are scheduled to play at the pool starting with Strategies for Hangman at noon, Hindsight at 1 p.m., followed by Nobody Cares at 2 p.m., Hey Stroker at 3 p.m., and John Wilkes Kissing Booth at 4 p.m.

"Lots [of the band members] go to Cal State University Long Beach and are giving back to the school," said Chris Dollar, A.S.I. Special Events Commissioner and official planner of the event.

The Pool Side event is funded and sponsored by the Student Union, A.S.I., Program Council, KBEACH and the chess club. The Student Union is giving students five free hours of games. A.S.I. and Program Council will provide money for the prizes and food. KBEACH will broadcast in between the bands. The  chess club will provide chessboards.

A Belly Flop Contest is scheduled at 1 p.m. The student with the best flop, the reddest belly or the biggest splash will be awarded a $25 gift certificate to Warehouse Music.

Students can sign up at the day of the event at the pool.

"The concert was a grand ol' time," said Oron Maher, who attended the concert last year. Maher said the best part of last year's concert was seeing all the students with their beach pride.
