Moore nabs top
West honors
By Alexander Gordon
On-line Forty-Niner
Senior center Jackie
Moore topped off a phenomenal season with the 49ers by being
named Big West Conference Player of the Year for women's basketball.
Moore, 6-foot-2,
is the first player from The Beach to earn the prestige honor
since Penny Toler in 1989.
"It's real
exciting," Moore said. "It's a big thrill. I can't
even describe it, coming from where I've been from. I've just
wanted to keep my strength and get stronger as far as being
in the post."
The 49er center
led the Big West in scoring, averaging18.8 points per game,
and field goal percentage at .564. She also was second in
rebounding at 8.1 per outing.
Moore scored in
double digits in 26 out of 27 games this year. Ten times this
year she eclipsed the 20-point barrier and twice scored more
that 30 points.
Moore had a career
high 35 points against UC Santa Barbara in the 49ers season
finale.
"I think what
emerged (this year) was really her strength," Head Coach
Dallas Boychuk-Bolla said. "She could score with two
or three people on her. This year she's been in the best shape
she's ever been in.
"For a center,
she's 6-2, and for college standards that's not real tall.
She's so strong, against 6-7 Lindsey (Taylor) from Santa Barbara,
she scored on Lindsey because of her pure strength."
Three other 49er
players were chosen, along with Moore, for All-Big West honors.
Joining Moore on
the first team is Reta Sula, a senior guard. Sula averaged
11.4 points per game on the season and led the 49ers with
56 three-pointers made.
Junior forward
Ekuah Ramsey was selected to the second team and junior guard
Tamara Inoue made honorable mention.
