The Cal State Long
Beach Career Development Center has been busy improving existing
programs and implementing new ones this spring semester. The
on-campus interview program, the internship program and the
comprehensive services program have all made headway this
year, improving both student and employer participation.
"The [Comprehensive
Services] program is progressing," said Peggy Hayden,
the program director. "We are continuing to make contact
with students."
Comprehensive Services
is a program designed to help students with self-diagnosed
disabilities find internships, or full-time meaningful work.
According to Hayden, only one person with disabilities in
every 40 is able to find work after they graduate. The goal
of Comprehensive Services is to raise that number.
This semester,
the program held two workshops, one interview workshop and
one workshop to help students with disabilities understand
government endowments. The second workshop attracted a capacity
crowd in the CDC boardroom.
The program will
also form an advisory committee that includes students with
disabilities to brainstorm for new workshop ideas. They also
hired a job developer this semester, Gina Lee Flores, who
will be talking to employers about utilizing the programs
at CSULB.
"I feel it
has been a successful semester," said Hayden. "We
had two very successful workshops and we're anticipating some
staff training this summer, specifically on how to work with
students with disabilities. We would like to broaden the scope
of counseling here."
The internship
program has made improvement in its Web site access for students
this semester.
"The internship
listings are accessible from home," said Robin Lee, the
Co-op Education Program Coordinator. "The system is an
automated, smooth and easy process. Once you create a profile
and resume, you can apply online."
Lee recommended
that students interested in internships for this summer visit
the CDC soon. It is not too late to find an internship, she
said.
"If students
are patient enough to go through the sign-in, there is a treasure
trove of information available," Lee said. "It has
been a successful semester. Especially with our partnership
with job track."
The CDC has information
available about internships for all majors. If a student is
unable to find a certain field listed, Lee asked that students
bring it to the attention of the counselors. They will then
contact employers in that field and find new listings.
The on-campus interview
program was also a success this year, after 97 companies came
to campus and interviewed 292 students and alumni.
"It was pretty
good," said Hal Schaffer, the coordinator of the program.
"It has improved. We had a little more students come
than last year."
The program is
open to all graduating seniors, continuing graduate students
and CSULB alumni. Next semester's interviews will begin Oct.
17 and end Nov. 29 for students who are graduating in the
fall.
The CDC's summer
schedule will be introduced June 1. Already in the works is
the a job search techniques workshop on June 12 and a job
search for government opportunities on June 14, which will
include guest speaker John Costello.
