Public relations
students at Cal State Long Beach placed third in the nation
last week in the Bateman Case Study Competition, the national
collegiate public relations contest that ranks college and
university public relations programs.
CSULB has placed
among the top three schools for seven of the past eight years.
Last year, CSULB was third and first in 1999. This year, 68
colleges and universities participated in the 2001 competition
that was sponsored by the Public Relations Society of America.
Five CSULB students
and their adviser traveled to San Francisco to compete in
the final round of the competition where students gave a 45-minute
oral presentation at VISA headquarters. Participating schools
were to develop and implement a public relations campaign
to educate 16- to 22-year-olds about the importance of financial
literacy.
The competition's
judges applauded CSULB for developing "a thorough, professional
campaign based on in-depth secondary and primary research,
well-developed objectives and strategies, and exceptional
creativity."
Lisa Cottini, Allison
Cranford, Jennifer Ferranto, Marilyn Padilla and Kimberly
Sneed, under the guidance of Associate Professor Emma Daugherty,
created an educational campaign targeting students, parents,
school officials and legislators in Long Beach.
The CSULB team
presented a "Budget for the Prom" workshop at Millikan
High School and held an essay contest at Sunny Hills High
School.
The team also produced
and distributed parent packets, money-management brochures
and course materials for high school teachers; hosted special
events and workshops; secured over 3 million impressions in
media coverage; and earned the support of Senator Betty Karnette
and Assemblyman Alan Lowenthal for money-management courses
in high schools.
