Employer interviews
available for seniors

Spring and summer
2001 seniors and continuing graduates may register with the
Career Development Center to schedule on-campus interviews
with different employers until May 17.
"There are
a couple reasons that students should participate," said
coordinator and career counselor, Hal Schafer. "It's
free to register and schedule interviews. You can schedule
interviews online, and interviews are held on campus. You
are only competing with Cal State Long Beach students, so
it reduces the competition pool.
"The interviews
are for full-time professional positions, and we will help
students write resumes and prepare for the interview."
Every semester
mailers are sent to graduating seniors and continuing graduates
inviting them to register with the CDC. Students are instructed
to go to www.careers.csulb.edu, where they will find all the
information needed to register at the Beach View link.
Approximately 700
companies are invited to participate, but about 150 to 200
actually do. The companies are predominately in the fields
of engineering, science, technology and business, but there
are a lot of jobs in the liberal arts field and some in health
and human services.
"We're still
working on placement statistics," said Marie Burks, recruiting
assistant for the center. "But a lot of students are
being placed and coming back as recruiters."
Students may submit
resumes and schedule interviews online, and they are asked
to conduct themselves and dress professionally for interviews.
Pre-screening before
the interview means that students are already qualified for
the job, so they should focus on personality qualifications.
"I am looking
for an outgoing student that is confident in their capabilities,"
said Larry Schultz, senior manager of BDO Seidman, an accounting
firm. "They have to portray an eagerness. I have to sense
honesty and willingness to try something. I'm recruiting a
well-rounded student. They need to have a good sense of direction
and be somewhat focused."
Schultz suggests
that students take advantage of practice interviews or workshops
if their departments offer them.
"I stress
highly going to practice interviews. It's a great benefit,
and it helps the student. Students should go to workshops."
BDO Seidman participates
in on-campus interviews once a year and usually makes offers
to students, but it is up to them to decide to accept or decline.
