on new mural

"Artistic
Expressions at The Beach" concludes this week with students
voting for the newest art display to be hung in the University
Student Union lobby.
What started as
a second installation to the painted mural in the Student
Union stairwell has morphed into a 9-by-13 foot stretch canvas
for the lobby due to a leak on the proposed wall.
Part of the competition
will be based on student votes and the other part on a panel
of judges. The admissions of this year's theme, "The
Bold Spirit at The Beach," are on display in the Student
Union by The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Students can vote for
their favorite piece starting this afternoon and Thursday.
The winner will receive $1,000 in prize money and supply funding,
allocated by the USU Program Council.
Other installations
from departments, such as industrial design and the Design
Student Association, can be seen in various places around
the Student Union.
"The arts
from our department are prominently known outside of our campus,"
College of the Arts President Kathleen Tatoonchie said. "But
we're trying to raise awareness inside of our campus. People
don't realize how much work these artists put into their production."
The departments
of art, dance, design, music, theater arts and film and electronic
arts will be showcasing works around campus as well.
In a combined effort
with Program Council, College of the Arts and Associated Students
Inc., the Week of the Arts has included an assortment of events,
including a poolside Carribean-style mixer, "Freestyle,"
a hip hop documentary and the art of scrapbook making.
Today's events
include: music by DJ Carol and an open mic, which is open
to all forms of self expression, at the USU West Terrace from
11 a.m.-2 p.m.; the art of pottery in the USU Center Courtyard
from 2-6 p.m.; and Battle of the Beats, an open mic and freestyle
battle, which will be held at the Soroptomist House tonight
from 8 to 11 p.m. with host Zaire Black and Beat Junkies Sound's
DJs What?! and J.Rocc.
Thursday's events
will include a theater workshop, taught by Joseph C. Phillips
from "The Cosby Show" and the film, "Strictly
Business," and the last Poet's Lounge of the semester
featuring live music from The Sanctuary, which will be held
at the USU West Terrace from 8 to11 p.m.
