discussion

Key ways to obtain
and enjoy internships were the highlight of a lecture given
Tuesday at the Women's Resource Center.
Robin Lee, coordinator
of co-operative education program at the Career Development
Center, pointed out the top five things students need to get
the internship of one's dreams. First is to show experiences
that one has already acquired from school projects and volunteer
activities. She added that money is important but not vital.
"If it is
an internship of your dream, let the money go," Lee said.
If students really want the internship, they should take it
even if it is a low pay or non-paid position, she said.
Second and third
are writing a good resume and cover letter. She handed out
a sample resume and went through what is important and what
to list. For example, if students have a GPA of 3.0 or above,
they should write it. Also, related experience is an important
factor.
The interview process
came in fourth on the list.
"Practice
your interview skills! This is what you're worried about,"
Lee said, mentioning that one of the most difficult questions
for students is "what are your weaknesses?" When
telling about their weaknesses, students should say something
that could also be strength.
Lastly, Lee said
following up — sending a thank you note, for example — is
an opportunity to remind employees that one had an interview
with them.
"I'm actually
volunteering, but I'm interested in finding out about internships,"
said senior women studies major Carol Toney. "She gave
us very helpful tips about resumes and good cover letters."
"I'm still
trying to figure out what I want to do," sophomore Danielle
Duterte said. She works with Lee at CDC and is interested
in an educational internship such as becoming a resident assistant.
"The cover letter hand outs and resume she gave us were
really good." Lee also discussed what CDC offers to students,
including resume critique, mock interviews and internship
programs. She encouraged students to visit the center whenever
they have questions. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.,
Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday.
