Disc jockey saves
open mic session

A disc jockey-equipped
stage and open microphones shined the USU West Terrace as
students ate and relaxed to upbeat music Wednesday.
The open mic session
was part of the different arts displayed throughout the "Week
of the Arts" event sponsored by the Associated Students
Inc. Program Council. DJ Careroll played various types of
dance music, while "scratching the wax" on two turntables
and a mixer.
According to the
council, the initial plan for the event was to encourage students
to showcase their talents by means of acting, dancing, rapping,
poetry and spoken word. For the most part, students were not
inspired to jump on stage and show off their skills, but the
audience enjoyed hanging out in the sunny terrace, listening
to music while eating lunch.
"I think it's
really cool and relaxing listening to good music out here,"
said senior Jesus Inzunza. "Even though no acts
showed up, I'm still having a great time."
Despite the no-shows
and empty seats, some students focused their attention toward
the center stage, while the disc jockey mixed up her records
with hip hop, old school and high-energy music.
"I worked
the sound for another open mic session earlier this week and
nobody showed up to perform as well," said audio and
visual technician Martin Bock. "I think it needed more
advertisement on campus."
Some of the students
in attendance said the university needs similar events throughout
the semester.
"The campus
has been somewhat quiet during the early part of the semester,
but now there seems to be something new going on everyday,"
said senior Richie Cruz. "There should be more functions
during the beginning of the semester."
