Ceramics not for
clay heads
By Julie Sipkovich
Special to the Online Forty-Niner
Students discovered
the art of pottery in the University Student Union center
courtyard Wednesday while taking part in Artistic Expressions
week.
Ken Carmen, a recreation
major, helped students to explore pottery and produce their
own personal creation. Carmen guided and joked with each student
as they took their spot at the pottery wheel.
In no time, students
began to gather around and watch Carmen at work. Student Albert
Zamora said he was drawn to the event "to spark an interest
in arts and crafts."
Each student was
able to keep their pots that they created.
"Now I have
something for Mothers' Day," said senior Edith Sarabia.
Carmen, who has
been designing pottery professionally since 1980, created
a perfectly sculpted vase in a matter of minutes.
Carmen brings his
talents to the community through his work at a psychiatric
hospital for the criminally insane. He works with patients
twice a week by helping them calm their emotions and giving
them an outlet to release negative energy.
"I use ceramics
as a therapeutic modality," Carmen said. "It's too
hard to depend on art for a living."
