Models and designers converge at CSULB

Kenesha Hylton
Special to the On-line Forty-Niner

Donald Henson takes the measurements of a prospective model and calls out, "34, 26, 34." This is no cattle call, it's Cal State Long Beach's annual fashion show, "Fusion."

FCS 354The fashion show will take place at noon on Thursday in the South Plaza of the University Student Union and will feature 150 models wearing garments made by fashion design students in the Family Consumer Sciences Department. The fashion show is coordinated by seniors Donald Henson and Marianne Lating with the help of Lisa Solariz.

The show, which will be the largest that the department has put on, will function around a U-shaped runway with a DJ playing music in the center.

"It will look similar to the MTV show Fashionably Loud," said Lating.

Student designers are asked to put pieces of their work in the fashion show based on the classes that they have taken. Students must take introduction to flat pattern, tailoring, draping and computer designing. Some of the garments that will be featured in the show are from categories such as experimental and freestyle. These categories allow students in the department to come up with their own ideas for designs. Coming up with one's own design can be beneficial to students, not only expanding their creativity but, also by giving them a chance to work with top designers.

The students participating in the show may be recruited by the designers who judge the show. Some of the judges will include Billy Green, XOXO, Quiksilver, BCBG, Aire De Paris and other notable designers. The judges at the show will have a chance to see the garments before the fashion show in order to judge them on the quality and the marketability, and the ability to sell.

fCs 4During the fashion show models will walk the stage in garments after spending four hours getting their hair, nails and makeup done. All models receive free, full make-overs along with the option to buy photos of themselves in the garments.

Designers Amanda Gallo and Leah Hardy say, "The most exciting thing to see during the show is  how your work comes to life." Gallo who is a second-year design student is featuring a shirt and skirt garment in the show and Hardy is featuring a shirt, skirt and pant outfit.

Kathy Lee a second-year designer is featuring two dresses and a pants dress outfit in the freestyle category. "Few students realize how difficult it can be to make clothes and make sure everything fits together," said Lee.

At the end of the fashion show audience members and models will have the opportunity to purchase some of the garments featured in the show through a silent auction.
