Near upset for polo

Staff reports

Chris Segesman and Aaron Holloway scored two goals each as the Long Beach State men's water polo squad gave No.1 USC all it could handle Saturday before falling to the host Trojans, 7-6, in double overtime.

Segesman scored both of his goals in the fourth period, helping the 49ers wipe out a 4-3 deficit and send the game to overtime tied at 5-5.

But USC's Predrag Damjanov and Ivan Babic each scored in the overtime period and the Trojans held off the 49er for the victory.

The contest was not only the season opener for both schools, but also a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Contest. The 49ers now stand at 0-1 in conference play, USC 1-0.

Nathan Allard and Kellyn Carlson also scored for LBSU.

The 49ers next game is against University of Massachusetts Friday in a non-conference match. Game time is 4 p.m. at the 49er Campus Pool.
