Two seniors, two
juniors, four sophomores and a freshman walk on to a golf
course.
Sorry, this isn't
the start of a joke, rather a description of The Beach's women's
golf team.
This mix of players
and varying degrees of experience could be the key to a strong
showing this season.
"We have some
good balance and depth, which is wonderful," said Head
Coach Sue Ewart. "We have seven players capable of shooting
the same score, and that's going to make up competitive."
Several of Ewart's
players competed in national events this summer, giving the
players added seasoning
"The older
players have been around block and know what's expected,"
Ewart said. "We've got quite a few years of experience
on this team."
Long Beach State
returns three top players from last season -- junior Carla
Legaspi and sophomores Hee Young Cho and Marie Louise Juul
-- plus two holdovers capable of making noise in senior Mira
Lee and sophomore Katie Webber.
Key newcomers includes
transfers Teal Thron, who comes in from BYU as a junior, and
former Long Beach Poly star Melanie Furuta, who transferred
from Oregon State and is a sophomore.
"The transfers
gives us added depth," Ewart said. "Both can shoot
in the 70s and are capable of going lower. Now it remains
to be seen what happens."
Spring is the traditional
season for golf, but scores in the fall will be factored in
to determine who goes to the NCAA regionals following the
Big West Championships in April.
According to Ewart,
LBSU had a below-average fall last season and the coach would
like to avoid a repeat this year.
"We need a
great fall [season]," Ewart said. "We'll hit the
ground running and try to post some competitive scores early.
"The girls
are geared up. There's some jitters, but once the flag goes
up, they'll be ready to play."
