Tough start for
soccer in Las Vegas
Staff reports
Long Beach State
women's soccer had a rough start to the season last weekend,
coming out of the Las Vegas Invitational with a tie and a
loss.
The 49ers squandered
a 2-0 first-half lead in its season opener Friday against
UNLV, eventually settling for a 2-2 tie, and lost to St. Mary's,
2-1, Sunday in overtime.
In the UNLV game,
freshman Kristin Travis scored in the 15th minute and Allison
Wiegand added another goal in the 34th minute to give The
Beach a 2-0 advantage.
But a short span
midway through the second half proved to be LBSU's undoing.
The Rebels' Anita Pedford scored in the 75th minute and teammate
Jenny Ruiz added another goal just over four minutes later
to tie the game.
Keeper Jihan Elgazzar
made eight saves and Caitlyn Murphy and Kim Stempkowski each
recorded assists against the Rebels. The 49ers outshot UNLV,
21-18.
Against St. Mary's,
Travis scored her second goal of the season three minutes
into the second half to tie the game, 1-1, but Sarah Rae Takekawa
of St. Mary's (2-0) scored the game-winner 11 minutes into
overtime to doom the Niners.
