Runners put on
hold
By Mike Haubrich

Saturday's Titan
Invitational at Carbon Canyon Regional Park didn't turn out
exactly as Long Beach State cross country Coach Andy Sythe
had expected.
Sythe planned to
sit his top runners and use the meet as a time trial for other
members of the team. The plan also meant the 49ers wouldn't
be taking part in the scoring of the team competition.
But Sythe found
out late in the week that things wouldn't work out -- since
it was an official scoring meet, an NCAA rule stipulating
runners from non-scoring teams couldn't run the meet with
those running from scoring teams would be implemented.
"We investigated
it," Sythe said, "and followed the rules."
So the 49er runners
waited for the official meet to end and did eventually run
the course, just not against any competitors other than themselves.
"It's a difficult
situation to do well in," Sythe said. "Having someone
to race against makes a big difference."
Sythe did come
out with a clearer picture of who will run for the squad during
the upcoming season -- Brian Robles and Aaron Trunnell on
the men's side and Molly Roche', Jennifer Yadon and Jessica
Lopez on the women's side all hit times set by Sythe and solidified
their spots on the team.
"We have a
solid core group," Sythe said, "and [this meet]
gave me a chance to evaluate the team a little."
LBSU's first official
meet is Sept. 15 at the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego
State.
