Givens' career high doesn't pan out for 49ers

Staff reports

Guard Bryn Britton scored a career-high 34 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Loyola Marymount to a 76-68 nonconference victory over visiting Long Beach State Thursday at Gersten Pavilion.

The 49ers (0-4) fell behind by as many as 13 points in the second half, but climbed to within four points twice in the final two minutes of the contest, on baskets by Jayme Conners and Glory Johnson. The Lions (6-2) held off the 49ers' charge by hitting several free throws down the stretch, including two by Raelen Self with 30 seconds left in the game that clinched the victory for LMU.

LBSU's Crystal Givens tied a career-high with 17 points and Johnson finished with 13 points. Jinga Gosschalk had nine points and seven rebounds and Tamara Inoue added eight points and seven assists for the 49ers, who lost despite shooting 51.9 percent from the field, including 57.7 percent in the first half. The Lions hit 43.3 percent of their field goals in the game.

Britton, a preseason All-America candidate, scored 16 of her points in the first seven minutes of the game and had 21 by halftime to give the Lions a 45-39 lead going into the break. The senior hit 13 of 20 field goals and connected on three three-pointers for the game.

The contest against LMU was the 49ers' last game before heading into the winter break. LBSU will look to improve on its record with several nonconference and Big West Conference matchups during December and January.
