Waves crash on Beach

Staff reports

Five Pepperdine players scored in double figures as the Waves cruised to a 93-83 victory over Long Beach State Tuesday in Malibu.

Terrance Johnson scored 20 points and Craig Lewis and Micah McKinney added 19 each for Pepperdine (3-2), which built a 14-4 lead three minutes into the game and led by as many as 19 points in the first half.

The Beach (3-4) cut into the deficit with a 16-5 run before halftime -- including the final eight points of the half -- to make it 51-43 at the break.

The 49ers were able to close to within seven points at 75-68 with 9:09 remaining in the contest, but the Waves went on a 10-3 run to make the score 85-71 and were never seriously threatened again.

Tony Darden led the Beach with 21 points, including five three-pointers, and Travis Reed added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Rudy Williams, who came into the game with a 14.7 points per game average, was held to four points by the Waves.

The 49ers next action is Dec. 12 against USC at The Pyramid.
