Texas unfriendly
to Beach
Staff reports
Bernard King's
20 points and 11 rebounds paced Texas A&M to a 71-56 win
over Long Beach State Friday night at Reed Arena.
It was the third
double-double of King's career, and the guard fell one assist
short of a triple-double. The game was payback of sorts for
the Aggies (4-0), who lost, 83-76, last year at The Pyramid.
The 49ers (3-3)
got strong play from its frontline, with Rudy Williams finishing
with 16 points and 12 rebounds and Travis Reed adding 10 points
and 10 rebounds.
LBSU took control
early, starting the game up, 10-1, paced by four points each
from Michael Darrett and Ron Johnson. Texas A&M recovered
and fought back into the lead at 18-17, helped by a five-minute
stretch in which the 49ers failed to hit a basket.
The Aggies were
up, 24-22, at the end of sloppy first half in which Texas
A&M shot 26 percent from the floor and the 49ers hit a
slightly better 39 percent.
The 49ers started
the second half as strong as the first, going on a 13-5 run
to lead by six five minutes into the half. The Aggies responded
with a 12-2 run of their own and never trailed for the rest
of the game.
Johnson matched
Williams with 16 points and Darrett had a team-high seven
assists, but those were counteracted by six turnovers. For
the game, the 49ers outrebounded the Aggies, 44-39.
Andy Leatherman
was the only other Aggie in double figures, finishing with
10 points.
