Five 49ers named MPSF All-Conference

Staff reports

Five Long Beach State men's water polo players have earned All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors, the most for the school since 1970.

Senior Chris Segesman, who led the 49ers with 37 goals this season and is fourth on the Beach's all-time goal-scoring list with 165, was named to the conference's first team and senior Justin Jewell (22 goals) was selected to the third team. Senior Scott Miller (20 goals), junior Aaron Holloway (32 goals) and sophomore Nathan Allard (18 goals) received honorable mention accolades.

The contributions of these five players helped LBSU to a 13-8 overall record this season and a fourth-place finish at the MPSF Championships, its highest finish since 1983.

Stanford freshman Tony Azevedo -- the son of LBSU Head Coach Rick Azevedo -- was named MPSF Player of the Year. Stanford's Dante Dettamanti earned MPSF Coach of the Year honors and the MPSF champion Cardinal placed three players on the conference's first team.

In other LBSU athletics news:

Wilkinson signs letter-of-intent -- Haley Wilkinson of Australia has signed a letter of intent to compete with the LBSU women's golf team beginning next fall. Wilkinson has trained the past two years at the Australian Institute of Sport and has won several tournaments, including the Bargara Ladies Classic, where 178 players competed over a three-day period.

Beach to host pole vault event -- LBSU will play host to the Pole Vault and Distance Carnival Dec. 9, an event featuring three of the top pole-vaulters on the West Coast. Beach sophomore Connie Jerz, who holds the LBSU record with a height of 13'1 1/2", will be one of the three competitors. Others competing are Washington State's Tamara Dile and San Diego State's Shayla Balentine.
