Two out of three not bad for Beach

Staff reports

Long Beach State's dreams of an undefeated season were short-lived as The Beach lost to Oregon, 97-67, Saturday in the final game of the America's Youth Classic in Eugene, Ore.

The 49ers (2-1) won consecutive games in the tournament to open its season, but fell behind the Ducks, 27-5, in the first half Saturday and never recovered.

Oregon connected on 35 of 61 shots (57.4%) from the field and had four players score in double figures on the night. Luke Ridnour led the Ducks (3-0) with 18 points.

Senior forward Rudy Williams led the Beach with 16 points before fouling out.

LBSU opened the season Thursday with a 71-64 victory over Western Michigan. Senior guard Ron Johnson led the 49ers with a career-high 20 points and six steals and senior center Travis Reed added 17 points, hitting seven of eight field-goal attempts, and a game-high nine rebounds. Williams chipped in with 15 points.

LBSU trailed Western Michigan, 36-34, at halftime, but used a 15-0 run to outscore the Broncos, 37-28, in the second half and claim the victory. The Beach hit 25 of 45 field goals on the game (55.6%) while holding Western Michigan to 21 of 60 shooting (35%).

Ben Reed led Western Michigan with 19 points.

The 49ers came back Friday to win their second game of the season by beating Alabama State, 74-55. A strong second half was again the key for LBSU, which trailed, 33-30, at halftime but outscored the Hornets, 44-22, in the decisive second half. Junior forward Tony Darden was the second 49er to establish a career high in points in as many nights with 21 and also dished out four assists.

Darden scored 17 of his points against Alabama State in the second half, including 12 during a 24-4 Beach run that turned a 41-34 49er deficit into a 58-45 lead.

Williams had another strong effort against Alabama State, hitting all 10 of his free throws and scoring16 points, pulling down a team-high eight rebounds and registering five steals. Johnson added 14 points.

Joey Ball led Alabama State with 16 points, including four three-pointers, but had to leave the game early in the second half with an ankle injury.
