49ers claim Big West title

By Marten Lewerth
On-line Forty-Niner

The top-ranked Long Beach State women's volleyball team clinched its eighth Big West Conference title in 17 seasons this weekend with road sweeps at Utah State and the University of Idaho.

Tayyiba Haneef led the nation's best offense with a total of 36 kills in both conference matches as the 49ers improved to 23-0 overall and 16-0 in the Big West.

On Saturday afternoon Haneef tallied 18 kills on .552 hitting as The Beach downed Idaho, 30-25, 30-19, 30-13, at Memorial Gym in Moscow, Idaho. The win ensured Long Beach its first conference title since 1998.

Senior Cheryl Weaver chipped in 11 kills on 23 attempts and LBSU fired away for a .311 attack percentage while holding the Vandals (10-16, 5-11 BWC) to a mark of .079 on 26 errors.

The 49ers dominated on the serve and in front of the net, connecting for 10 aces and out-blocking the Vandals by a margin of 9.0 to 4.0.

Beach setter Keri Nishimoto dished out 38 assists in her team's 19th sweep of the season and both Haneef and junior Brittany Hochevar finished with three aces.

Brook Haeberle led the Vandals with 10 kills and six digs.

On Thursday night, Haneef paced the floor with 18 kills and eight digs as LBSU defeated Utah State, 30-16, 30-22, 30-24, before 1,003 at Marvin Hall in Logan, Utah. Rounding out the 49er attack was Weaver with 15 kills on .625 hitting and Elisha Thomas with nine kills and four blocks.

Nishimoto had 48 assists and seven digs as The Beach hit .398 against the Aggies (17-9, 11-5 BWC), who committed 27 attack errors on .113 hitting.

Hochevar and Lindsay Phillips both had 10 digs in the victory and defensive specialist Tracy Bulquerin had seven digs after being out of practice all week with a leg injury.

Shauni Fluckiger led the Aggies with 13 kills. Lisa Borom fired 12 over the net and Erin Cartwright had 10.

The 49ers return to The Pyramid for back-to-back matches to close out the Big West schedule. The Beach take on Idaho tonight and Utah State Tuesday. Both matches start at 7:30 p.m.
