Staff reports

The Long Beach State men's and women's basketball squads begin their season's this weekend.

The men's team travels to Eugene, Ore. to take part in the America's Youth Classic today through Saturday. The Beach plays Western Michigan tonight at 6 p.m. to open its season, then takes on Alabama State Friday at 6 p.m. before closing the weekend against Oregon Saturday at 8:15 p.m.

The women's squad opens both its regular season and home schedule with a Saturday contest against visiting Syracuse. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at The Pyramid.

The women's team beat Love & Basketball, 85-67, Tuesday at The Pyramid in an exhibition game as senior Ekuah Ramsey scored 18 points and freshman Jayme Connors added 17 points and nine rebounds.

The top-ranked LBSU women's volleyball squad (21-0, 14-0 Big West Conference) begins a four-game-in-five-days stretch with a road match tonight against Utah State (15-8, 10-4 BWC) at 6:30 p.m., then head north to take on Idaho (9-15, 4-10 BWC) Saturday at 1 p.m. to close the weekend's slate of games.

The 49ers then return to Long Beach to play back-to-back home matches against the same two schools Monday (Idaho) and Tuesday (Utah State). These matches -- both rescheduled after being postponed in September -- will be played at 7:30 p.m. at The Pyramid.

The Beach will clinch its eighth Big West championship with a sweep on its matches today and Saturday.

In LBSU club sports, men's soccer concludes the season at the Association of Collegiate Club Soccer National Championships in Cocoa, Fla.
