Seniors go out on top

By Ben Dimapindan
On-line Forty-Niner

For seven seniors on the Long Beach State men's water polo team, Saturday's contest against UC Santa Barbara was their final home game. They electrified the home crowd at the 49er Campus Pool one last time and went out just how they wanted to -- on top.

No. 5 LBSU outscored No. 10 UCSB, 7-2, in the second and third quarters en route to a 13-8 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory that ran the team's win streak to six games.

The Beach offense opened sluggishly, but junior defenseman Aaron Holloway kept the 49ers in the game with a pair of goals in the first quarter.

LBSU (12-6, 4-4 MPSF) regained their usual form in the second quarter and pulled ahead, 6-4, scoring three goals as a result of good ball movement.

"When Holloway [was out with foul trouble], the guys really stepped up and delivered when they had to," 49er Head Coach Rick Azevedo said. "We basically switched systems a little bit. They were expecting one thing and we were playing something else. That opened up the game real quick."

LBSU put the Gauchos (7-10, 2-6 MPSF) away in the third quarter with a four-goal explosion that gave The Beach a 10-5 advantage. The run was highlighted by senior two-meter man Chris Segesman's thrilling final goal as a 49er.

Segesman seized the ball in UCSB territory, streaked up the length of the pool and fired the ball into the net on a one-on-one situation against Gaucho goalie Trevor Spence.

"I thought 'this is a blessing,'" Segesman said. "I was surprised the ball was just sitting there. I saw the opening and knew I was going to just take it to the cage."

In addition to Saturday's victory, the 49ers defeated No. 8 Loyola Marymount, 5-2, in a nonconference road game Thursday. Segesman led the way for LBSU with three goals.

The Beach returns to action Nov. 23-25 at the MPSF Championships in Berkeley, where the 49ers should be seeded No. 5 in the nine-team tournament.
