Injury mars win

By Marten Lewerth
On-line Forty-Niner

The 49er win was no surprise, but it came with a cost.

Defensive specialist Tracy Bulquerin suffered an undetermined knee injury Saturday as the top-ranked Long Beach State women's volleyball team swept Big West Conference rival UC Irvine, 30-17, 30-24, 30-16, at Crawford Hall.

"We don't know how bad it is, but she won't be practicing," 49er Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro said. "Tracy's probably the biggest emotional leader on our team, so not having her will be difficult."

With Bulquerin out of the match, freshman Kelsey Young was called into the lineup.

"I had big shoes to fill," Young said. "Tracy's amazing, but I was excited to get in there and finally play."

Aside from the rattling effect of losing Bulquerin, the 49ers (21-0, 14-0 BWC) had little difficulty against UCI (3-20, 1-13 BWC), which was hobbled because of injuries to Chanda McLeod and Dana Kurzbard.

Tayyiba Haneef led the floor with 22 kills on .310 hitting as LBSU posted its 17th sweep of the season. Junior Elisha Thomas was second offensively with 11 kills on 18 attempts and six blocks. Having a quiet night was senior Cheryl Weaver, who finished with 10 digs and seven kills on only 13 attempts. Setter Keri Nishimoto dished out 44 assists, three kills and seven digs.

The 49ers hit .485 in the first game with Haneef posting nine kills on .727 hitting. After closing the game by claiming the final six points, LBSU's attack faltered slightly in Game 2 because of Bulquerin's injury. The Beach hit .225 and Haneef had 10 kills to lead the way to a 30-24 advantage. In the final game Weaver and Thomas both had five kills as the 49ers fired at .406 and the contest ended on an eight-point run with Haneef tallying the final two kills.

Kelly Wing led UCI with 14 kills and setter Ashlie Hain had 26 assists and eight digs.

Next up for the 49ers is a road trip this weekend for conference matches against Utah State and Idaho.
