Six score as Beach rolls over UC Irvine

By Ben Dimapindan
On-line Forty-Niner

There was no one superstar shining for the Long Beach State men's water polo team Tuesday against UC Irvine, instead the 49ers had six bright stars who lit up the net en route to a 6-4 victory on the road.

The key to winning for LBSU against the Anteaters, much like the rest of the season, was not to rely only on one player, but to work collectively on both sides of the ball.

Six players scored for No. 6 LBSU and the 49ers' defense held host UCI to only two goals over the first three quarters in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest.

"The last few games we have just been playing as one strong team unit," Head Coach Rick Azevedo said. "It really showed. We had six different guys scoring for us. Plenty of different players stepped up. When one guy would make a mistake, another one would cover for him."

After a scoreless first quarter, LBSU (10-6, 3-4 MSPF) erupted with a three-goal second quarter. Junior defenseman Aaron Holloway fired in a goal midway through the quarter to put The Beach ahead, 2-1.

The 49ers followed up with another pair of goals from the strong offensive tandem of senior drivers Justin Jewell and Brett Adams in the third quarter to build a 5-2 lead.

In the fourth quarter, LBSU senior goalie Brett Adolph, who recorded 10 saves in the game, stifled the UCI offense and its attempts to rally. However, UCI (5-11, 1-6) did manage to score twice late in the fourth quarter to narrow the final score to 6-4.

"We dominated the whole game," Azevedo said. "The final score was just not indicative of how dominant we were. The score was 6-2 pretty much until the end of the fourth quarter.

"We basically slowed down our offense at that point and took care of the ball on defense. They scored a couple times at the end, but those goals were meaningless."

The 49ers return to action today at 2 p.m. when they travel to Loyola Marymount for a nonconference game.
